Hanna Park Camping – Paradise in Our Backyard
Did you know that you can camp in your very own backyard? And by your backyard, I mean in Mayport, just a bit north of Neptune Beach. You may have heard of the Mayport Naval Base, but have you heard of Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park?
Birds & Branches
It’s an adventurer’s paradise, complete with beach terrain, lakeside fishing, and camping in the woods. I first visited the park when I heard about an Eleven22 beach baptism. We took our pups to the beach, but didn't explore the more inland part.
On another visit, I found the amazing kids' playground surrounded by gorgeous oak trees and Spanish moss. Near the park, there is a large lake with some scary alligators. In the middle of the lake are little islands, where Cranes and Anhingas (snakebirds) perch. With the stunning clumps of cabbage palm fronds, green grass, and lake foliage, you will want to bring a camera.
A Playground Robed in Spanish Moss
Next to the playground, zip line, and trees, there's a large splash park. The seasonal splash park is free with park entry. It is open from early May to October. Even little ones can have fun with a range of fountains, sprinklers, and flower water structures.
The entire area is very family-friendly. There are picnic tables all over and benches. There is plenty of parking by the playground as well. There are bathrooms not too far from the splash park and playground, so you could spend the entire day playing.
If you get bored, there’s kayaks to rent and banks perfect for fishing. And there’s the beach. Both areas are full of picnic tables and grills.
Can You Reserve Paradise?
I'd tried to book a reservation for Memorial Day weekend for YEARS. It was so cheap, around 20 bucks a night. The park reservations would book up early. Finally, this April we were able to book a one-night stay, a kind of starter camping trial. We wanted to see if we could handle the outdoors.
With it being a holiday weekend, the place was packed to the gills. It wasn't a secluded trip in the mountains where you are away from society. But it was the outdoors.
There were giant campers with mosquito tent pergolas, pop-up gates surrounding lounge chairs, and people of all ages. It says that 14 days is the limit for a stay, but some people looked set to stay for a month or two. We had enough activities packed for a month and food for maybe 4 days.
Our Prius was crammed with food, supplies, and the whole family. We overpacked, stuffing a beach tent, an old pup tent, and a new 4-man tent in the car. There’s space to park at each site. And again, the bathrooms aren’t too far away.
We're Going Camping Now...
We set up our 4-man tent in the light of day when we arrived. While getting settled, we took in our surroundings. The plants and landscape scenery were breathtaking. The place was alive.
With mosquitoes. We brought the bug spray and religiously kept the tent flap zipped. It wasn't yet warm out, and we had the perfect weather to not get full on devoured by bugs.
The campsites have fire pits with a grill on half the circle. We forgot to get firewood, so we were stuck with charcoal, which worked for the burgers and hot dogs. However, it doesn't offer the best light.
You will see bikers everywhere and lots of dogs. Bringing our chihuahuas with us was risky. Our sweet critters yap at anything that moves. But being able to cuddle them in tent, and let them hang in the wagon worked out.
Let's Unpack This
Our daughter was game for the whole adventure. Falling asleep, as expected, was a bit tough. Between flashlight shadow games and the stack of books we brought, we had plenty to entertain us.
The next day, we tried to get the Turkish coffee press hot enough on the charcoal. It was slow going. After some hard-boiled eggs and a jaunt to the bathrooms, we started packing up. It was time to take the beach tent for a spin in the sand.
Suffice to say, the beach was a fun sweaty time of Lucy and the pups get absolutely covered with sand. And once again we packed up. Then headed home to unpack. There's a lot of packing in camping.
Quick Tips
- Get to the park early if it's a busy weekend, otherwise you will wait in a long, slow car line and maybe not get in.
- You can't bring in alcohol, and there are a lot of signs reminding visitors of the rule. It does make it a bit more family-friendly.
- If you camp, you don't have to pay the typical $5 a car or whatever it is to get in.
- The best time to go camping in North Florida is really October to April. Basically, if the splash park is open, it's likely too hot to sleep.
- There is a camping store by the site. Check the hours and get firewood early.
- Bring a lantern if you don't have firewood.
- Consider two nights to explore a bit more.
- I'd skip paddleboarding here because of the gators.
- You can get married at Dolphin Plaza on the beach. But that's a whole different story....
All in all, no one got hurt. We had fun. And Karthryn Abbey Hanna Park offers an unbeatable glimpse into the green of Florida swamp tropical fauna with the majesty of the ocean just across the street by the dunes.
