Confession: I love shopping.

Any shopping. Even if it’s not for me. The picking and choosing and redefining self, redecorating the world. All of it is thrilling. Best of all, at the end of the day I can cheer someone up with a gift that is tailored to their personality.

Choose Your Own Gift Adventure

I’m addicted to the customization part. Not only do I get to choose from fun gifts and explore home items, tech accessories and pet items – but I also get to design each item to my friends’ (or my own) taste. In a recent online shopping adventure, I chose some cute little presents for Mother’s Day. Instead of being bogged down by the pressure to find the absolute perfect gift, I got to ride a creative frenzy and narrow down all my favorite options. The result? Three specialty gifts for mom: a pot holder, a tumbler, and a garden flag.

My Initial Kitchen Preference

I started with a small item, since I knew I didn’t want to be limited by buying just one gift. The practical pot holders seemed like a good place to start. I chose one with chickens, because my mom is really into French Country décor. I personalized the pot holder with her initials, because I think MONOGRAMS ARE SUPER FUN. She did end up telling me that it wasn’t exactly her kitchen colors. But I didn’t see any flowery royal blue and white pot holders that were a precise match to my childhood home. I think this was her least fave gift. My sis has the same initials . . . maybe she needs a pot holder?

Tumbler Talk

After exploring the collection of insulated tumblers, I quickly narrowed down my favorite: The Anna Heart Arrow Tumbler.  The design with an arrow through the heart simply says “I love you, mom” with just the right amount of frill. Above the design, I could personalize the cup with her name. My mom’s name is Cathryn and she’s taken to signing her emails (and texts, actually) with “Momcat.” I picked out the baby blue color, and boom boom, another present was in my shopping cart.

Let’s hope she doesn’t accidentally lose this cup. It’s a definite possibility. So far, she’s been keeping it safely with her where ever she goes. I think this gift was her favorite.

A Sign of Hospitality

My last surprise for mom was a garden flag with a pineapple and our family last name. At my grandparents’ house there was a prominent doormat that read “Wellkommen” which always intrigued, confused and welcomed me to their household. It’s a fond memory, even if the German word confused 7-year-old me. A garden flag seemed like a great way to bring this memory to life and continue the tradition of inviting guests with open arms (Hint, hint, mom, I want one too!).

The pineapple is an international sign of hospitality, which makes this design perfect for my mom. She loves inviting people from all over the world into her home. It’s her gift and her passion. The ornate writing with our last name makes the flag more exciting than a generic home goods type decoration. So now she can welcome everyone into the home with a clear flag showing that they are in good company.

Anyways, this holiday was special for me because I got to find new ways to express my appreciation for all the things that make my mom uniquely momcat.
